NEW INSTALLMENT OF KEXP DOCUMENTARY SERIES “HIP-HOP: THE NEW SEATTLE SOUND”

August 7, 2010

KEXP
This week’s installment of the KEXP 10-part series “Hip-Hop: The New Seattle Sound” profile Shabazz Palaces. Ishmael Butler is best known for his work with the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Digable Planets from the 1990s. These days he’s heading up a new project called Shabazz Palaces with beatmaster MTK. The music is hard to pin down, it’s layered with textures and story fragments. The groove is haunting and the hooks hit deep. They made a splash at SXSW this year, were listed as a “Best new track” my Pitchfork, and just picked up the first Stranger Genius Award for Music. In this episode, Ish talks about growing up as an artist working with Digable, his unique definition of success, and why Shabazz Palaces’ music is shrouded in mystery. Local hip hop duo Shabazz Palaces has just won The Stranger’s first ever Genius Award for Music. MC/producer, Ishmael Butler and drummer/mbira player, Tendai Maraire, along with all the Genius winners, received a sheet cake exclaiming “You are a frickin’ genius” as well as a no-strings-attached reward of $5,000. The Genius Award for Film was given to Rob Devor and Charles Mudede for their work on Sundance-premiered films such as Police Beat, Zoo and this year’s Unnamed Sarah Jane Moore Project. The Stranger Genius Awards Party is going down on September 17 at the Moore Theatre where winners will accept their awards and Shabazz Palaces will perform. Congrats to all!
